2018 Bake Off and VIP Afternoon Tea
On Friday 15 June a group of 24 Year 5 children went to Trent College to take part in our very own Bake Off competition.
The competition was organised in partnership with our friends at Trent College who provide the opportunity to cook up a storm in their purpose built Food and Nutrition Suite.
In preparation for their visit they had been working on a mini-project designing cupcakes for and afternoon tea with the Her Majesty The Queen. We talked about kitchen hygiene, undertook taste tests to discover the perfect cupcake recipe then designed our amazing cupcakes.
After all the preparation at school the children were transported to Trent College where they soon got to work. They weighed, mixed, folded a whole range of ingredients then baked their cakes. Once the cakes were in the oven then came the washing up! Clean and tidy once again, Mrs Rigley demonstrated a range of decorative techniques to inspire our bakers. As the clock ticked, the kitchen was a hive of activity as the children raced to put the 'icing on the cake'! Time up and their creations presented to the judges...
Following a lovely lunch up at Trent College, the children returned to hear the eagerly anticipated results of the competition following the independent judges' long deliberations. And the winners are... (have a look through the photos to see our winners).
Whilst the bakers were busy baking sweet treats, the remaining Year 5 children, made preparations for our 'Invite a VIP to Afternoon Tea' event (sadly HM The Queen had a prior engagement). Busying away the children made bunting, sandwiches, salad kebabs and iced biscuits for our invited guests.
A fantastic event, a big well done Bake Off chefs and the indispensable team of Year 5 children and teachers who prepared a very delicious afternoon tea. Thank you to everyone at Trent College for inviting us to be part of this experience and to Mrs Markwell and Mrs Slater who continue to inspire us to get creative in the kitchen.
