Week 12

Hi Year 4, I hope you've all had a wonderful week!

 

This week (week beginning 8th June 2020) your Maths will be focused on decimals and your English will be moving from character to setting descriptions. Hopefully you've gathered together some resources for our DT transport project this week to finish off our topic as that will be the focus to Learning Challenge! We will continue our Sikhism unit in RE and your Computing challenge from last week will roll over to this week to give you a chance to finish that off too. Don't worry, I'll add any information about any continuing work onto this page so you don't have to go to the previous week to get the activity details.

 

Next week, we'll be starting our new topic which is another Geography based unit called:  Where on Earth am I? Mapping the world. 

 

I hope you're all doing well and I can't wait to see your fantastic DT Transport models! I've added some videos for some ideas in case you need some guidance to follow. I've tried to find vehicles which don't need many resources (and most of the materials needed are ones that tend to be around the house) and I've also tried to include examples of vehicles which can move. The videos all give a walk through guide of how to make each thing step by step so you can follow and pause the videos accordingly - some use glue guns but sellotape would work just the same.

 

If you manage to take pictures of any of the activities you complete, don't forget to send them over, I'd love to see them! If you have any questions about any of the work set or are struggling with any activities that I can help with, please let me know and I can give you some support. Likewise, if you need some extra challenge or would like to have extension activities, please contact me and I can share some websites and further resources with you to be getting on with. Remember - it's so important to be trying to keep up with your handwriting, spelling, times tables and reading each day. Each of these skills are so vital to your learning and will help to improve your Maths and English skills in so many different ways! Accelerated Reader quizzes can still be done from home and include so many books so it's worth checking to see if you can complete quizzes on any of the books you've been reading recently. There are so many times tables resources available such as TT Rockstars, I'll also add a blank multiplication square template below for you to print and time yourselves. You could just practice certain times tables or try to complete the entire grid. Can you do one grid each day and improve your time? I've added the Accelerated reader link and a link to some spelling games below!

Week Beginning 08/06/2020 Maths English PM Lessons Daily Activities
Monday

L.O: I can identify decimals that make 1 whole.

Use the pdf slides (Slides 1-31), support powerpoint and worksheet to identify how many tenths and hundredths in 1 whole.

L.O: I can use inference to answer questions about a setting description.

Your reading comprehension is called The Curse of Cogston House. For an easier comprehension, choose pages 1-4. For a middle difficulty, choose pages 5-10 and for a more challenging comprehension, choose pages 11-17

L.O: I can create a mode of transport using a variety of materials.

Decide on a mode of transport to create and do some research about the parts that make up this transport. Draw a rough plan to work from so that you can see what parts need to be created and in what order. Using objects/materials from around your home (yoghurt pots, cereal boxes etc) construct your model! I've added some ideas below for different project ideas to follow.

Tuesday

Using slides 32-58 of the pdf L1-5 lesson slides, answer the questions on the worksheet and complete the extensions if you're wanting further challenge.

L.O: I can use inference to answer questions about a spooky setting.

Using the same text as yesterday so that you should be familiar with it, read through the slides of the guided reading powerpoints Part 1 and 2 and answer the questions about each part of the story.

Wednesday

Using slides 59 - 82 of the pdf L1-5 lesson slides, answer the questions on the worksheet and complete the extensions if you're wanting further challenge.

L.O: I can identify key features of a spooky setting description.

Read through the building tension and suspense powerpoint and take a note of the grammar choices used to create a spooky effect when writing. Using the same methods, write a short paragraph or two to describe a dark forest at night during winter time. Think about the sounds you'd hear at night time and the things you might come across. Use all 5 senses: see, hear, smell, touch and taste to describe the forest.

Science (Summer 2 - Lesson 2)

LO: I can group items of litter into categories and interpret data presented in a bar chart.

Thursday

L.O: I can order decimals

Using slides 83-104 of the pdf L1-5 lesson slides, answer the questions on the worksheet and complete the extensions if you're wanting further challenge.

L.O: I can plan a spooky setting description.

Use the spooky setting worksheet (it's up to you which difficulty you choose - there are 4 templates of the same worksheet, the first is the most basic and the last is the most challenging). Think about the story you have become familiar with and what makes it so spooky. Use these techniques plus the ones you learned yesterday to complete your planning sheet.

L.O: I can discover information about Sikh marriage ceremonies.

Read through the slides about Sikh marriages and complete worksheet 4A (a wedding invitation) and read the fact sheet found in the work section.

Friday

L.O: I can round decimals.

Using slides 105 - 122 of the pdf L1-5 lesson slides, answer the questions on the worksheet and complete the extensions if you're wanting further challenge.

L.O: I can use the key features to write my own setting description.

Using all of the knowledge gained throughout this week (and remembering that you should magpie any wow sentences from the Cogston House story) write your own spooky setting description. There are some spooky setting images on the powerpoint or you could think of your own. Try to infer the characters feelings of fear without telling us 'he was scared' eg. His whole body trembled as he cautiously crept into the dilapidated building. Think about how you can uplevel your language choices using similes and metaphors eg. the branches of the tree were sharp could become the branches were witches fingers, scratching the sky.

L.O: I can create media to promote e-safety.

Use any piece of software that you have available at home to create media which promotes an aspect of e-safety.

Computing

 

Use any piece of software that you have available at home to create media which promotes an aspect of e-safety. Here are some examples:

 

Create a poster using word processing or publishing software to promote safe-searching.

 

Use i-movie or other video recording / editing software to create an advert encouraging people to be kind online.

 

Use audio recording / editing software to create a radio-advert which encourages people to use strong passwords.

 

Use presentation software to create a presentation for an assembly advising children about SPAM emails or fake news.
