Phonics

Read Write Inc Phonics

We recognise that secure phonics knowledge is essential for fluent and confident reading. We use the Read Write Inc. Phonics programme in Lower KS2 and Read Write Inc. Fresh Start programme in Upper KS2 for pupils requiring ongoing phonics teaching or intervention. We use the Fresh Start scheme for our older children to ensure that the books and texts they are reading are age appropriate. Staff delivering phonics are trained in the programme to ensure consistency.

Identification and Assessment
  • All pupils entering Year 3 complete a phonics screening assessment, using the RWI assessment resources.
  • Results identify pupils who require ongoing phonics support.
  • Pupils receiving phonics intervention are reassessed at least each term, however phonics teachers are encouraged to inform the Phonics Lead to assess certain children when they feel they may be ready for the next stage.
  • Assessment information is used to place pupils in the most appropriate group.
  • Phonics lead monitors progress and identify gaps in phoneme and grapheme knowledge.
  • Phonics Lead shares with phonics teaching staff, class teachers and parents the outcomes of assessments and each child's gaps.
  • Parents/carers receive a letter which informs them of phonic gaps in the child's knowledge.
Phonics Intervention
  • Pupils who need further phonics support receive daily Read Write Inc. sessions.
    • Pupils in Year 3 and Year 4 receive RWI Phonics programme
    • Pupils in Year 5 and Year 6 receive RWI Fresh Start programme.
  • Teaching is matched to each pupil’s assessed phonics stage.
  • Support continues until pupils meet the expected standard.
  • Children who attend phonics reading sessions, have a phonics reading book which links to their stage on the programme which they take home.
  • Children have spellings in line with their current phonics stage.
Teaching and Progression

Read Write Inc. helps pupils to:

  • Develop accurate and automatic word reading.
  • Apply phonics when reading unfamiliar words.
  • Build fluency through repeated reading.
  • Develop confidence through carefully matched texts and structured progression.

Pupils receiving phonics intervention also have weekly spellings linked to the sounds being taught. Regular assessment and targeted intervention help ensure pupils become fluent and confident readers.
