What We Are Learning

Autumn 2 - How does where we live in the UK affect how we live and what we do?

🍂Autumn 2🍂

This half term, Year 3 will be exploring how where we live in the UK affects the way we live and what we do. From discovering the UK's seas, rivers and ports to investigating forces and magnets, children will develop their knowledge through exciting, hands-on learning. Alongside this, we'll write diary entries and poetry, design wearable technology, learn about the Christian Trinity and take part in Anti-Bullying Week. With festive events such as our Snowman Orchestra Trip and Christmas Fayre, it's set to be a busy and enjoyable half term!

Geography – How does where we live in the UK affect how we live and what we do?

We’ll be journeying across the UK to discover how our surroundings shape the way we live! Children will explore urban and rural areas, the seas that surround us, and the rivers and coasts that influence our weather, jobs, and daily life. We’ll look at how the UK trades with other countries through its busy ports. Get ready for some map work, investigations, and plenty of geographical discoveries!

English

In English, we will be writing thoughtful diary entries and creative question-and-answer poetry. Our reading lessons will be based on A Bear Called Paddington by Michael Bond, helping children develop their inference, vocabulary and discussion skills.

Maths

Our mathematicians will continue developing their confidence with addition and subtraction before moving on to multiplication and division. We will use practical resources, problem-solving activities and reasoning challenges to strengthen understanding and fluency.

Science – Forces and Magnets

Get ready to be pulled in by science! Children will explore how objects move on different surfaces and investigate the mysterious powers of magnets. They’ll experiment with push and pull forces, test materials to see if they’re magnetic, and have fun predicting whether magnets will attract or repel — a hands-on topic full of discovery!

Computing – Connecting Computers

This half term, pupils will discover how digital devices work and how they connect together. They will learn about computer networks, explore how people and devices are connected digitally, and investigate how our own school network helps us communicate and share information.

PE – Invasion Games and Gymnastics

In Invasion Games, children will build their teamwork and tactical skills as they practise passing, receiving, and defending. In Gymnastics, they’ll explore ways to travel, roll, balance, and jump - combining movements to create exciting routines using apparatus. Active, energetic, and full of fun!

Religious Education – What is the Trinity and why is it important for Christians?

Children will learn about the Christian belief in God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. They will explore the story of Jesus' baptism, understand the significance of baptism for Christians, and compare how Christians express their beliefs through worship and daily life.

PSHE – Valuing Differences (Including Anti-Bullying Week)

This term’s PSHE topic is all about celebrating what makes us unique and special. Through stories, discussions, and teamwork, children will learn about different families, communities, and cultures. They’ll explore how kindness and respect bring people together and what we can all do to stand up against bullying.

Music – Ballads

Our musicians will learn about the features of ballads and how songs can tell stories. They will sing, perform actions, create rhyming lyrics and work together to compose and perform their own verses.

Design Technology – Ballads

Children will explore how technology has evolved and investigate products designed for specific users. They will use coding and computer-aided design (CAD) to create their own wearable technology product before evaluating and improving their designs.
