What We Are Learning

Summer 2:

Get ready for an exciting half term as we explore the fascinating world of rivers! We will discover how rivers shape the land, support life and influence where people live across the globe. Read on to find out more about what we will be learning!

 

Geography – Rivers

This term, we will investigate rivers, their key features and the journey they take. We will explore how rivers change the landscape through erosion, transportation and deposition and why settlements are often built near rivers. We will also learn about trade routes such as the Suez Canal and consider how rivers support global communities.

English:

This half term, we will explore a range of genres including explanation texts, free verse poetry and report writing. We will immerse ourselves in creating vivid poems about rivers, before writing detailed trip reports about our experiences at the Derby Museum. We will continue to develop SPaG skills through revision and consolidation.

Reading Fluency:

We will continue to develop retrieval and inference skills through guided reading of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

Maths:

Our focus will include times tables, time, statistics, shape, and position and direction. We will apply learning through problem-solving and reasoning questions.

Science – Living Things and their Habitats

We will:

  • Group living things in a variety of ways.
  • Use classification keys to identify local and global organisms.
  • Understand how changing environments can pose threats to living things.

P.E – Outdoor Adventurous Activities (OAA) and Athletics

We will develop skills in:

  • Teamwork and problem-solving through orienteering challenges.
  • Exploring fixed and open trails.
  • Athletics: obstacle jumping, throwing, relays, and multi-event team challenges.

R.E – Belonging and Identity

We will:

  • Explore what shapes our identity and sense of belonging.
  • Compare beliefs and expressions of identity across communities.
  • Understand the responsibilities of being part of a global community.

PSHE (RSE) – Growing and Changing

We will learn to:

  • Understand emotional and physical changes during puberty.
  • Know the differences between safe and unsafe secrets.
  • Identify parts of the body and understand the basics of human reproduction.
  • Discuss the menstrual cycle and how our bodies send us important signals.

Art: Fabric of Nature

We will:

  • Use observation to create art in a photorealistic style.
  • Explore textiles and repeating patterns in design.
  • Understand different purposes of art and refine our visual storytelling.

Design Technology: African Instruments

We will:

  • Research and analyse traditional African instruments.
  • Design and create our own kalimbas using suitable tools and materials.
  • Perform and evaluate the instruments in a collaborative musical performance.

Music – Ukulele

We will:

  • Practise and perform songs for a parent concert.
  • Learn to play notes clearly and build confidence for live performance.

Modern Foreign Languages – Spanish - Greetings

We will:

  • Say hello and goodbye (formally and informally).
  • Ask and answer simple personal questions.
  • Use everyday greetings confidently in conversation.

Computing – Repitition in Games 

We will:

  • Learn how to use loops (repetition) in coding.
  • Explore different types of loops to create patterns and actions.
  • Modify and improve existing games.
  • Design and create simple digital games.
