Sawley Junior School is 50 years old! We’d love you to join us on our Sawley Living Museum Day On Friday 11th July Come and join us any time between 1pm and 3pm We’ve had a hugely positive response from all the children as we have progressed through our 50 year anniversary celebrations.
On each of our ‘Decade Days’, the children have embraced the request to dress up either in the fashion of the era or as a famous person from the decade. Already this year we’ve welcomed into school Margaret Thatcher, Neil Armstrong, Darth Vader, Mr Benn, Madonna, Olivia Newton-John & John Travolta, John Lennon and Audrey Hepburn to name but a few!
I must say a huge thank you to the parents for supporting us with this; it has really helped to bring the learning alive for the children. Decade Days have involved the children in creating art work for our Living Museum Day in July. I won’t say too much about what you might see in the Living Museum, but walking around school to see what the children have been doing has been fascinating and a real step back in time for me having been born in the 1960s. Some of us ‘more experienced’ members of staff have thoroughly enjoyed educating our children as well as our younger colleagues!
We will be sharing all our work with you on Living Museum Day on Friday 11th July when we will be inviting the whole community into school to celebrate the children’s work and our anniversary.
We have invited many old friends to join us for the afternoon – Mr Blockley will be returning for a second visit along with Mr Armitt, Mr Breakwell, Mr Mackinney, Mrs Gent, Mrs Turnbull, Mrs Devenport (Mrs Burton the 1st!), Miss Williams and Mrs Wragg to name but a few! We are still waiting for confirmation from many more.
Mr Armitt has kindly provided us with some cine film from 1980/81 where he recorded a year in the life of Sawley Junior School. We are currently having this transferred onto DVD and will hopefully be showing it on the day.
Please come and join us! |
As you will be aware from my letter dated 31st March, 2014, the Governing Bodies of Dovedale Primary School, Shardlow Primary School, Sawley Junior School and Sawley Infants & Nursery School are proposing to establish a Multi-Academy Trust and we are currently undergoing consultation.
It was lovely to see so many parents at the consultation evening last night and we thank you for your continued support.
Please click here to access all the documentation we have shared – the original letter, a parent information leaflet and PowerPoint highlighting similarities and differences between LA schools and academy schools.
Although the final decision regarding conversion rests with the Governing Body, any views raised by parents are valued and will be considered.
Our consultation completes on 9th May, 2014; if you have any questions or comments regarding the conversion of Sawley Junior School to an academy, please write to the Chair Of Governors Councillor Daniel Walton via the school email address.
You may notice our website has changed slightly - but everything is still here!
The main changes:-
As always, let us know if you have any comments.
Swimming lessons – Summer term 2014
We plan to start swimming lessons on Monday 28th April until 10th July. All children will be expected to take part.
Please note: Not every child in each class will be able to swim every week due to limited space in the pool; your child’s teacher will tell them which weeks to bring their kits.
All children will need a one piece costume, towel and swim hat every week and all earrings must be removed. Swim hats are available to purchase from the office at £1 each.

v Dovedale won 2-0
v Shardlow won 1-0
v Grangemount won 2-0
Final positions

4 Dovedale 6 points
5 Grangemount 6 points
On Wednesday 26th March, the Year 6 team won the Erewash Netball Tournament at the Long Eaton School. Results were:-

Sawley won all games scoring a total of 23 goals and only conceding 1 goal in the game against Grangemount 2-1! All that practice paid off guys!!
Sawley will now go on to represent Erewash in the Derbyshire County finals in May.
A huge thank you to the parents who came along to support the children, they really appreciate it and so do we.
And as always, a huge thank you to Mrs Lacey whose dedication to sports and our children is second to none.
The School Council have decided to support Sport Relief on Friday 21st March.
All pupils will be walking or running a mile around the field during the day and are asked to donate £1 towards the charity. Pupils may if they wish gain additional sponsors.
Please ensure your child brings their trainers into school on Friday. (Please note normal school uniform to be worn on Friday)
Basketball - The Final!! - Fri 07 Mar 2014
Sawley pupils really did the school proud at the basketball yesterday. They came =3rd in their section with 7 points but placed 4th on goal difference.
Three schools had 7 points overall, so joint 5th with two other schools out of the 10 schools there and we were told that was out of the 400 schools in Derbyshire!
They did really well after only two practices plus the four short games at the tournament!
I've never seen anything like it in 35 years teaching. It was so competitive! I was totally exhausted by the end! Four pupils had parents with them and they were thrilled by their performance and experience.
So results as I know so far -
1 William Gilbert - 15 points
2 Dronfield Stonelow - 13 points
3 Osmaston - 12 Points
4 Fairmeadowe - 11 points
(The above played two more games which is why their points are a bit higher)
5 St Albans, Sawley Junior Oakwood Junior - 7 points
8. Bolsover C of E - 6 points
9. Harpur Hill - 5 points
10. Brampton Primary - 4 points
Goal differences may affect the final placings - but hey, =5th out of 400 schools - WOW!
Well done to all of you
Mrs Lacey
Awards we have acheived so far.
