What you will find below is historic news of events and activities here at Sawley.
From June 2019, most of our celebration news has been posted on ClassDojo or Twitter.
5th Annual Activity Day - Pirate Day!
Wednesday 22nd July 2015
This year pupils will take part in;
Pirate Boat Racing
Pirate Mask Making and Quiz
Pirate Water Races
Pirate Blind Trail Around the “Jolly Roger”
Pirate Deckball
Pirate Dancing
Walking the Plank!!
Ice-cream Van Visit
All pupils are invited to wear pirate outfits and trainers (or their PE kit)
We will hopefully be outside most of the day so please also ensure your child has their water bottle, sun cream and a sun hat with them.
Unfortunately, we have had to change the timing of our Sports Day. It will now commence at 9.30am on Wednesday 24th June. We do apologise for any inconvenience this causes you.
Each year group will come together to race and win points for their owl and the winning team will be rewarded with the school sports day trophy.
Each owl has been given a colour:
Eagle – Red
Tawny – Green
Snowy – White
Barn – Blue
We would like to ask, if possible, that your child could come to school on this day with a t-shirt of their owl team. The t-shirt can have a small logo or small parts of other colours, as long as the main colour is that of the ones stated above. If this is not possible, please do not worry as we can provide coloured bibs that the children can wear over their normal white PE top.
We are all looking forward to representing our teams and having lots of fun! Hope to see you there to cheer on our school and may the best owls win!
Please use the Wilmot Street entrance on Sports day.
Thank you,
Miss H Roe
Year 3 teacher and Sports Day organiser
Summer term 2015 lessons
We plan to start swimming lessons on Monday 20th April until 16th July. All children will be expected to take part.
Please note: Not every child in each class will be able to swim every week due to limited space in the pool, however, please send them with one in case a space becomes available.
All children will need a one piece costume, towel and swim hat every week and all earrings must be removed. Any children with long hair must make sure they have it tied back for their lesson. Swim hats are available to purchase from the office at £1 each.

All children are welcome to take part the “decorate a boiled egg” competition which will be judged during the day. Please bring all entries to the hall on the Friday morning with your child’s name and class marked on it. The theme for this year is “Eggciting Reading”. We would ask that the maximum size for all entries is shoe box size.
We would also welcome any donations of Easter Eggs to be used in the raffle for the Friends of Sawley Juniors School. Raffle tickets will be on sale at 20p each break time for pupils to purchase from 17th March. Donations of any size egg can be left at the office.
Can we just say a very 'Big Thank You!', to both parents and children for the effort you gave to supporting our Book Week. Everywhere we looked on Friday, we saw a wealth of book characters all around the school - from classic fiction to modern fiction, from fairy tales to science fiction, you all looked fab-u-lous!!!
Everyone had a wonderful week sharing books, reading books, creating wonderful things based on favourite books, as well as meeting some real-life authors Cid and Mo who introduced us to the 'Janksters' and having a storytelling session kindly delivered by Derbyshire Library Service. A busy week I'm sure you will agree!
One key message we aimed to promote during the week was that much fun can be had from reading and that all that practise reading aloud to parents to perfect our reading skills, can open up a whole new world! Please continue to encourage your child to read - it truly is a skill that will enrich their lives forever!
Our Book Week this week will begin on Monday 2nd March 2015. During this week we have planned plenty of fun reading opportunities and activities to get the children excited about reading. Our theme is Heroes and Villains.
Don’t forget, the ‘Reading in an unusual spot’ competition will end on Monday 2nd March 2015, and winners will be announced during this week. Make sure children hand their photo to their class teacher, with their name, class and book they are reading written on the back.
On Tuesday 3rd March 2015, authors - Cid and Mo - will be visiting our school to talk about reading, writing and their series of books about the Janksters.
The Janksters are two boys who love to get into mischief and play practical jokes. The first book involves a talking slug! Cid and Mo will be bringing along a few jokes to share with the children! Beware!
If you would like to buy a book, Cid and Mo will be returning to school on Monday 9th March 2015 to personally sign copies to children. The books cost £5. A letter will be sent out on the day of the initial visit with a form to fill in.
Finally, as part of Book Week, we are inviting children to dress up as a book character on Friday 6th March 2015. The costume must reflect the theme: Heroes and Villains. Children may want to dress up as a hero e.g. Harry Potter, Katniss Everdeen or Matilda. On the other hand, they may wish to be a villain for the day and dress up as Snape, Captain Hook or Mrs Trunchbull. Feel free to think creatively e.g. if your child came to school with some props as clues or wearing one or two key items rather than coming in full costume, that would be absolutely fine.
This week, you will receive your child’s Mid-Year Report.
This report is an indication of your child’s work habits, attitude to learning and social skills in school. It also includes information regarding attendance and some helpful targets for your child. The Mid-Year Report can be discussed with your child’s literacy and numeracy teachers at our forthcoming Open Evenings on:-
Monday 23rd February at 3.45pm - 5.00pm & Tuesday 24th February at 3.45pm - 6.15pm.
On Tuesday, you will receive your letter to indicate appointment times. Click here for the letter.
IMPORTANT NEWS - Changes to the way we assess your child
From September2014, the Government Department for Education (DfE) made a huge change in the way that children in schools are to be assessed. This is a new way of thinking for schools, and assessment will look very different to how it has done for the past 20 years. Included with your child’s report will be a guide to hopefully give you some clear information about the changes that are happening in Education and what that means for the children here at Sawley.
For more information on the new assessment arrangements, join us at Open Evening where we will be on hand to discuss assessment in more detail with you.
MOBILE PHONES IN SCHOOL
We are seeing an increasing number of parents that are requesting that their child bring a mobile phone to school. More often than not, this is for the purpose of communication when their child is walking to and from school.
While it is true that mobile phone technology provides benefits of quick and ready communication, mobile phones are not allowed in the classroom at Sawley Junior School.
With this in mind, it is strongly recommended that pupils should not bring mobile phones to school. If there are specific reasons why parents wish their child to have a mobile phone in school, they must obtain permission by writing or speaking to Mrs Burton or Mrs Taylor.
If a pupil has been given permission to have a mobile phone in school, it must be switched off and handed into the School Office by 8.55am. The phone can be collected at the end of the school day. The phone must be clearly identifiable as there may be duplicate models.
Emergency contact
Emergency contact with pupils should be made through the school office (telephone 0115 9733626) and not via pupils’ mobile phones. Similarly, pupils can use the school office should urgent contact with parents be required.
Responsibility for mobile phones
Please be aware that the School Office is not always occupied and that the school cannot take responsibility for the safety/security of mobile phones handed in at the school office.
Awards we have acheived so far.
